My Opinion - "The Baron's Betrayal"

It's been two years since Lady Marion Tunstall lost her husband at sea. Two years of sorrow and grief. Only now has the young, comely widow finally re-entered society. It isn't until she and her family attend the merriment of a country dance that Lady Marion sees her dead husband, alive and well... and faints dead away. 

Lord Tristan Tunstall has no choice but to confess—he is alive, yes, but not a whole man who can be a husband and father. When he offers her a divorce, however, Marion stubbornly refuses. Now she has forced herself back into his life, and into his home and (oh, God forgive his weakness) his bed. He cannot stop himself from wanting her. Loving her. But can he live with the secret she is keeping from him? 

This is the fourth volume in the series Marriage Market Mayhem. I have not read the previous and I think I should not have lost much since this is the best rated and could not give it more than three stars. 

In my view, the story is well thought out. However, the characters are a little weak and aren't captivating at all. The female character, Marion spent two years thinking that her husband had died at sea, victim of a shipwreck. Two years later, she is still alone and dependent on her mother and the rest of the family. Did not overcome the trauma and the pain of having lost her husband, her best friend since childhood. 

Tristan, her missing husband, returns to London. However, it is not his will that Marion knows that he is alive and whole, so he remained hidden for two years and no one had the idea that he had survived the sinking. 

However, in spite of being alive, the accident left him with irreversible physical damage. Tristan lost his sight and with it, also lost all his self-esteem. He does not consider man enough to protect his wife and future children.

So he repudiates Marion and tells her that he wants to file for divorce so she can find a man up to her. However, at that time women who divorced were stained with honor and hardly another man would marry her, so Tristan agreed to her to be living in his home. The only requirement was to be no physical contact between the two. They would live like brothers, although they loved eachother with all their hearts. How strange is that? Since when is a completely normal man, for being blind can not be a married man and fully able to protect your family?

From the beginning what annoyed me the most was that! Lack of confidence and self-esteem, both Tristan, as Marion. From the time when Marion discovers that her husband is alive, she moved bags and baggage to his house and he does nothing but to tell her that he loves her, but does not fit her because he's blind! This is the phrase that more is repeated throughout the book. Boring!! He's always running away from her, and she is always trying to hunt him so that he can realize that she doesn't care if he's blind or not, because she loves him anyway.

From my point of view all of this running and hunting makes the story tiring and in sometimes nagging. On all the situations that it seems that he's going to accept his blindness and accept Marion again in his life, he scares up and hide's himself like a coward. 

Guess that this story deserved stronger characters.

Nevertheless, I personally liked very much the appearence of Argos, the stray dog that becomes Tristan's eyes and best friend. Also liked the valet that served Tristan's needs without any reservations, although he's a little bit foul-mouthed, and really aprecciated that Tristan still treated himself, not letting his body to decay. He practiced boxing, shooting target and made long walks, even though he could not see a thing. 

I think I recommend it, but don't expect to much!

Este é o quarto volume da série Marriage Market Mayhem. Eu não li os anteriores, mas quer parecer-me que não devo ter perdido muito uma vez que que este é o melhor classificado e não consegui dar-lhe mais de três estrelas.

Na minha opinião, a história é bem pensada. No entanto, os personagens são um pouco fracas e não conseguiram cativar-me. A personagem feminina, Marion passou dois anos pensando que o marido tinha morrido no mar, vítima de um naufrágio. Dois anos depois, ela ainda está sozinha e dependente de sua mãe e do resto da família. Não superou o trauma e a dor de ter perdido seu marido, o seu melhor amigo desde a infância.

Tristan, seu marido desaparecido, retorna a Londres. No entanto, não é a da sua vontade que Marion saiba que ele está vivo e inteiro, então ele permanece escondido por dois anos e ninguém tinha a ideia de que ele tinha sobrevivido ao naufrágio.

No entanto, apesar de estar vivo, o acidente deixou-o com danos físicos irreversíveis. Tristan perdeu a visão e, com ela, também perdeu toda a sua auto-estima. Ele não se considera homem suficiente para proteger a sua esposa e filhos futuros.

Assim, ele repudia Marion e diz a ela que quer pedir o divórcio para que ela possa encontrar um homem que a consiga proteger e dar o que ele não consegue, ou pensa que não consegue. No entanto, naquela época, as mulheres que se divorciavam eram consideradas mulheres sem honra e dificilmente um outro homem se casaria com ela. Sendo assim, Tristan concordou que ela ficasse a viver em sua casa, visto que eram casados aos olhos da Sociedade Inglesa. A única exigência era não haver contacto físico entre os dois. Eles iriam viver como irmãos, apesar de se amarem um ao outro profundamente. Quão estranho é isto? Desde quando é um homem completamente normal, por ser cego não pode ser um homem casado e totalmente capaz de proteger a sua família?

Desde o início o que me incomodou mais foi a falta de confiança e auto-estima, tanto de Tristan, como de Marion. A partir do momento em queela descobre que o marido está vivo, ela muda-se com malas e bagagens para a casa dele e ele não faz mais nada a não ser dizer-lhe que a ama, mas que não serve para ela porque é cego e nem se pode titular de homem! Esta é a situação que mais se repete ao longo do livro. Chato!! 

Ele está sempre a correr para longe dela, e ela está sempre tentando caçá-lo para que ele possa perceber que ela não se importa se ele é cego ou não, porque ela o ama de qualquer maneira.

Do meu ponto de vista tudo isto torna a história cansativa muitas vezes irritante. Em todas as situações que parece que ele vai aceitar a sua cegueira e aceitar Marion de novo em sua vida, ele assusta-se e esconde-se como um covarde.

Acho que esta história merecia personagens mais fortes. No entanto, gostei muito da inclusão de Argos, o cão de rua que se torna os olhos de Tristão e melhor amigo. Também gostei do "criado" que serve Tristan em tudo, sem quaisquer reservas, apesar de ser um pouco desbocado, e realmente gostei do facto de que Tristan cuidasse de si mesmo, não deixando que o seu corpo se degradasse. Ele praticava boxe, tiro ao alvo e fazia longas caminhadas, mesmo sem conseguir ver nada.

Acho que recomendo, mas não tenham muitas expectativas!
