Excerpts

"With every shifting of the breeze, my heart sped up. Every shadow made me jump. The small campfire crackled and smoked, playing with my vision.

“It’s him, isn’t it?” Luke said quietly. “Your fiancé… you think he’s out there somewhere?”
“Yes. My father would have sent him.”
“Why?”
“Because he will stop at nothing to get me back.”
“But the sky has been quiet for a while,” Luke said softly.

I looked up. There hadn’t been the sound of helicopters this morning, even though the sky was clear now and vibrant blue above the treetops.

“Do you really love this guy?” Luke asked softly, and I heard him hold his breath.
I forced my head to nod. “Yes.”
“Then you have my word that I won’t hurt him,” he said.

I adjusted the blanket and stayed by his side while he fell asleep. On the edge of my nerves, I kept a watchful eye on the bushes and the gun ready in my hands."

*****
"I wasn’t dead. I knew this because I was freezing and everything hurt—every muscle, bone, and toe—I could feel them, but I couldn’t move them. I tried to open my eyes, but they wouldn’t budge. It was as if they were glued shut. I tried to raise a hand to pry them open, but my arms wouldn’t cooperate. My toes wouldn’t wiggle, my knees wouldn’t bend, and my tongue wouldn’t shift around behind my teeth. What the hell was happening?
Relax. Don’t panic. Breathe… that seems to be working just fine… breathe… try again…
Fingers. Toes. Tongue. Nothing.
I was paralyzed.
Okay, now panic.
I tried desperately to scream, but I couldn’t even swallow. Was this hell, or was I caught in a strange deep sleep that I couldn’t wake from? Maybe I was buried alive. Maybe I couldn’t move because the earth was holding me down… but there was heat on my cheek and chest... I would be cold head-to-toe if I was in the ground…"

THE SETTING for SERENADE

The area of Banff was a huge inspiration to the story. The characters are entirely fictional, but the setting isn’t. The mountains are so incredibly romantic, rugged, and full of their own mystery, and the Banff Springs Hotel is a castle perched amongst them... it was the perfect backdrop for my story.

Imagine a massive, 768 guest room hotel as your own private home...
